Union hopes to educate students about water

Following in the footsteps of Toronto’s Ryerson University, York University’s student union has introduced a “Bottled Water Free Campus” campaign in hopes of eventually phasing out the use of plastic bottles on campus.
Yusuf Mohamed, vice president of equity of the York Federation of Students (YFS), said the water is a basic human right.
Two years, 36 focus groups, 516 safety surveys and one missed deadline later, the long-awaited York safety audit was finally released June 25, bringing with it some interesting suggestions and observations.
The audit, conducted by the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC) and initially due out last summer, offers York administration 101 recommendations for improving campus safety, including making an equity studies
or women’s studies course mandatory for all undergraduate students; implementing an educational program – run by men, for men – on the prevention of violence against women; and increasing security sta ng levels and reviewing their “non-intervention policy” of handling
conflicts.
